Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed.
The most popular homeschooling math program hands down! Highly recommended by both Mary Pride and Cathy Duffy, Saxon Math also wins our award for the "Most Requested Text." Saxon math is a "user-friendly" math program - even for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and other usually difficult math topics. Learning is incremental and each new concept is continuously reviewed, so the learning has time to "sink in" instead of being forgotten when the next topic is presented. Higher scores on standardized tests and increased enrollments in upper-level math and science classes have resulted where Saxon has been used in public schools. Students like Saxon because they feel successful in math instead of overwhelmed. Because of the format, children are able to work more independently.

Can my child go from Saxon 7/6 to Algebra1/2 without doing Saxon 8/7?

BEST ANSWER: Absolutely, this is exactly what I did with my child. My son is naturally talented with math and I skipped the 8/7 series after finding many of the concepts redundant. We began the algebra 1/2 and it worked out excellently. I also bought the two cd series, the lesson teaching cd and the answer key walk along cd and wow how they amplified the lesson experience and cane to the rescue niece when there was a typo in the book (only one). So don't worry at all.

The Saxon Algebra 1/2 has a lot of review, so possibly. Make sure to have your child take the Saxon assessment and definitely have them do the book that is recommended according to results.

Coming from Rod and Staff math 6th grade should we take Saxon 76 or Saxon 87- student does well in math just wants to be challenged a bit. Rod and Staff does not seem to introduce enough concepts- great for drilling arithmetic facts but not enough material to prepare for higher math. Or am I wrong? We thought of switching now so we can get used to the format through high school.

BEST ANSWER: I was in this same position when my son finished R&S level 6 math. My son took the Saxon placement test and scored borderline between 7/6 and 8/7. After asking on various forums he did 8/7. Saxon is similar to R&S I think. They are both rigorous and solid math curriculums. We switched because I planned to use Saxon for upper level mathematics up to calculus which R&S doesn't do and I wanted him to be comfortable and familiar with the Saxon methods. He did great with 8/7. He also used Life of Fred prealgebra at the same time and loved it! It teaches the relevancy of math and makes it fun. As a side note, he is a math lover and I never have to help him or really check his work much.

We 'tried' public school for my 7th grader last year. I withdrew her because she was failing math (and too much drama). I filled in her "Math Holes" with Saxon and then started her on lesson 80 of Saxon 8/7. She then studied independently and ACED every single lesson thereafter! Super proud of her! So here's my question: Is pre Algebra necessary or can I go straight to Algebra 1? I wouldn't normally consider it but she got 100s on every assignment from Saxon 8/7 lessons 90-120! I even hid my grade book and watched her work a lesson, thinking she might have cheated! She sure wasn't! Just needed the right tools!

We have not done Saxon 8/7, but we did Saxon Algebra 1/2 last year so I can't really give a comparison. But, a homeschooling friend, who uses Saxon for her own kids and tutors others (and was a Math major in college!) has told me that Saxon 8/7 and Algebra 1/2 are the same and you don't really need to do both. If you've done one or the other then you should be ok moving on to Algebra I.

My son had no problems going right into Algebra 1. I was told that the Pre-Algebra is more for kids who struggled with Saxon 8/7. I did ask the opinion of my sister, who teaches 8th grade, and she suggested Algebra 1 as well. Especially since my son didn't struggle with Saxon 8/7, he had a good foundation for starting Algebra. Hope this helps!

My child is 14 and need a review of the basic math. Which book will cover important concepts needed before Agebra I?

BEST ANSWER: Math 87 starts with a complete review of all basic math concepts - addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percents. The first 80 lessons are mostly all review. Algebra concepts are introduced in the last 40 lessons. It sounds as though Math 87 would be a good course for your child.

My son just finished 6/5 with no problems. I've been told the 7/6 has a lot of review. Is it too big of a jump to go from 6/5 to 8/7?
User on Aug 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I have used the Saxon Math homeschooling program for the last 16 years and I would never skip a book.
There is review on 7/6 as there is in all of them, but it won't be long before new concepts are introduced which will lead in to the 8/7 book.
Personally, I would be afraid my child may be lost beginning 8/7 without completing and mastering 7/6, which could result in frustration and then having to 'back track.' I know each child moves at a different pace, but I do not think you will be disappointed if you stay on course and move forward in Saxon order.

My daughter found the first 90 lessons to be review but the last 30 lessons were a lot of new stuff. I had her go through 7/6 two lessons at a time. She would do two new concepts and lesson practices each day but just one mixed practice. She did every test and investigation. When she got to the final 30 lessons, she had to slow down and just do one lesson a day otherwise it was too overwhelming and she wasn't getting enough practice on the new concepts.

My son has just finished 6/5 and had no problems. I've been told that 7/6 has a lot of review. I don't want to buy a whole set if there is tons of review. Is going to 8/7 too big of a jump from 6/5? Is there a lot of review in 8/7 of 7/6?
A shopper on Aug 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: All Saxon has a lot of review. The usual jump year is after 8/7 to Algebra 1. I would get 7/6, and give him tests at where you think he's at. When he makes enough errors, say, 3...then jump start him in the book there. If he finishes early, due to starting further on in the book, just have him start on the next book. Having done Saxon 1/2 after 8/7, I would just skip that and go straight to Algebra 1. Mine was good at Math, but made careless mistakes, so I made him do it for honing his computation accuracy. That's the one that has the most rehashing. It has the pre algebra review, but nothing they can't pick up in straight Algebra 1. All Saxons start out with the rehash...it's just the way it is. I like it for that. Summer kills their brain cells - in a therapeutic way...but often they need that refresher, just not always as much as the book begins with.

I would have him take the assessment and see how he does. If you are familiar with Saxon they do a great job of the review that you are mentioning. That's why so many people use it. I have heard of others going through and skimming Algebra 1/2 when they get there. You could also scale the assignments and do those that are new. Hope this helps. Another thing I would look at is how good is he at his facts. Without which I wouldn't move forward.

are there additional materials required for this math program?
A shopper on Dec 10, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No, but you can use less or more resources as you choose. The DIVE dvd's (sold separately from Saxon) are good resources if you want your child to watch a video of a professor teaching the new concepts (about 15 minutes per lesson) but they are not necessary. Using Saxon, in my opinion, can be tailored to the student, if they need repetitive, thorough progress to absorb math concepts, then do every problem at a steady pace. If they get bored easily this way, they need to move through the material more quickly or might benefit from supplemental math study. Saxon's strength is ALL the concepts needed, presented in the order that builds a strong foundation for the next math level. But it can be plodding and slow for the voracious math learner (IMHO)

Awesome.
This is a great system. The lessons are well laid out. There are plenty of examples and we can work through the practice problems together. He really enjoys math and the mixed lesson gives him just enough to absorb the lesson. His education has been hindered by his ADD and the special education classrooms were distracting. With COVID, I was his teacher remotely and found it difficult to keep him focused, so we turned to homeschooling. Thank you from a new teaching Mom.

gold standard math
No use to look for anything else. They have it in Saxon. My children always score high on our required annual standardized tests, but especially outpace their peers at math. Spiral approach and mental math are essential. And math at home helps eliminate the anxiety which is the real reason we struggle as a nation at math. Also, i never ever time the tests. Jo Boaler (Purdue Math Pedagogy genius says that is a big no-no and I believe her :)

Zero Stars should be allowed
There is almost NO NEW MATERIAL in Saxon 8/7 as compared to 7/6. Before we purchased Saxon 8/7, my 6th grader used Saxon 7/6 for half of a year, and found it incredibly slow and boring. The needless repetition kills curious learning minds. We didn't even do any Mixed Practice but just focues on "Lesson Practice" which is supposed to be new material, but my son already knew 80-90% of the book contents from 4th grade level Math In Focus curriculum (I highly recommend this curriculum originating from Singapore). I went ahead and bought 8/7 thinking that maybe my son just needed to advance a year, in the Saxon content, but I was wrong. The Saxon material is severely below level and I found that 8/7 is almost a full repeat of content in 7/6 . It's possible the last 25% of the book has new material because I haven't gone through that yet page by page, but I already led my son through 75% of the book in 2 hours and he already knew the concepts either from Saxon 7/6 or from Math in Focus for 4th grade. If Americans use Saxon, the USA will remain behind other countries in producing future leaders in STEM areas.

Response from Rainbow Resource Center
Regarding the 75% repetition in 8/6 in comparison to 7/6, you are correct. The Saxon program is founded on review and repetition, being a spiral program, with a focus on constant repetition so that math becomes innate. In this particular volume, that equates to the 75% review and 25% new material at the end of the book. We highly recommend any student taking the specific curriculum's placement tests prior to starting a new program (or switching from another). That ensures that students are starting on the correct level; curricula can vary significantly from one to another. Our link for that is here: https://www.rainbowresource.com/searchspring.php?q=math+placement+test
Awesome math.
I use it for my almost 7th grader. It does a great review of reviewing past concepts while introducing new ones. It allows the kids to remember the math they have learned as they learn new concepts.

Excellent Math curriculum
My daughter has tried several math curriculums, and this is by far the best! The worksheets have proven to improve her skills. Lastly, the lesson instruction with examples are very easy to understand.

Saxon 7/8 Homeschool a Winner
Very happy with this purchase. Saxon has tailored these books to easily be used in a homeschool setting. These books are the new 3rd edition, but with some layout tweaks that make them more user friendly. Solutions manual is super. Price is very reasonable. Highly satisfied with my purchase.

Great!
Very easy to use. We used the level assessment first to make sure we were on the right level and this seems to be perfect. The only thing I would change is the warm-ups. They are the same for each day.

Awesome!
So very pleased! I've been homeschooling for 6 years now and Math has proven to be very difficult. I have 2 children in different grades and they learn very differently. But Saxxon Math has made all the stress and intimidation go away! My children are able to set down almost on their own and do the work. It's amazing! I will be returning to Rainbow Resource for our future curricula needs.

We have been using Saxon Math for the past year My sixth grade daughter placed into 7/6 at the start of our homeschooling adventure and she was very successful 8/7 was the next logical choice but I did consider some of the newer "high-tech" options for math but then decided "if it isn't broke don't fix it" We went with Saxon 8/7 and could not be more pleased with the decision No its not the latest and greatest computerized curriculum but it is a solid math curriculum for arithmetic and pre-algebra The set-up is the same as the previous years with facts practice mental math and problem solving before each lesson The lessons are detailed and full of examples and lesson practice allows the student to try their hand at a variety of problems specific to the lesson Mixed review offers additional problems from the current lesson as well as previous lessons When problems come from previous lessons they are clearly marked which lesson they came from With the kit comes the Student text Facts practice and test book and the Solutions manual Whether you are new to Saxon or an experienced Saxon user this is the set for you!

1 out of 5 stars: My kids are currently using Saxon 7/6 (7th grader) and 8/7 (8th grader) I pulled them out of our public middle school because I wasn't satisfied My city is definately a year behind our suburban neighbors Saxon does have alot of review problems (called "mixed practice" from previous lessons) but my biggest issue with Saxon is that there are not enough practice lesson problems for the lesson you are learning My kids were gettting frustrated because they never really felt that they were mastering a new skill before having to practice problems from previous lessons Also there is no organization in Saxon There are no chapters It skips around quite a bit My kids were expected to use knowledge of something on a lesson and became frustrated because they hadn't yet been taught that skill and then it ended up being taught 5 lessons later I'm so fed up with Saxon Maybe it would be fine if I had been homeschooling all along and started early on with Saxon but for us there were too many gaps We are in the process of switching our math curriculum (and also our grammar since we have been using Hake grammar and have the same issues) I will have to play "catch up" and try to teach 2 years worth of math in less than a year so that my kids won't be behind when they go to charter school for high school I was so excited to start using Saxon and Hake and those are the only 2 curriculums that I am disappointed with

We just opened our Rainbow Resource order box My daughter pulled out her Saxon 8/7 math book and has already started working She is able to work through it all on her own It is only August 3rd--we were not planning on starting school until September! My daughter used Saxon Math at her previous private school It is so nice to be able to order the homeschool version and have her jump right in where she left off Thank you for a wonderful item we are very pleased!

My now 13 year old daughter has had a very bad relationship with math throughout her life We have tried so many programs (a new one every year) but she just could not seem to retain even the simple things This past year for 7th grade we gave Saxon 87 a try I am so impressed with how well she is now doing She doesn't cry when we sit down to math now and those things that she couldn't master before have become a little enjoyable for her Depending on your child's math "ability" it may not require teacher prep If your child is like my dd it still only takes minimal preparation which is awesome when you have three or more that you homeschool simultaneously It isn't very expensive compared to other programs but Rainbow Resource has great discounted prices which makes it even better

I tried a number of math programs with my daughter beginning in second grade when I began homeschooling her She despised math at that point and did so until we found Saxon Now math is her favorite subject The program is clearly written and because it only introduces a small piece of a concept in each lesson (so that there is time to master that piece before adding another) it allows mastery of the concept without any struggle I particularly appreciate how the answer book doesn't just give the answer but shows how it was solved This is extremely helpful for homeschoolers My daughter is 11 and we just ordered our fourth Saxon book (8/7) I appreciate the discounted cost Rainbow Resource offers for this program It's worth every penny
